152. What Is Ruqyah And How To Perform It

By Asma bint Shameem

Ruqyah is reading Aayaat from the Qur’aan, authentic Duaas from the Sunnah of the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam or other duaas seeking a healing from Allaah against sickness, disease, evil eye, magic etc.

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam performed ruqyah on himself and on others and when he was sick, Aaishah radhi Allaahu anhaa read it for him.

Our Mother Aaishah radhi Allaahu anhaa said:
“When the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam was ill, he would recite al-Mi’wadhatayn over himself and spit drily. When his pain grew intense, I recited over him and wiped him with his own hand, seeking its barakah (blessing).”
(al-Bukhaari, Muslim)

*Can you do ruqyah for someone else*?

Yes that’s allowed.

The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam did ruqyah for al-Hasan and al-Hussain

Ibn ‘Abbaas radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam used to seek refuge for al-Hasan and al-Husayn, and he would say: “Your father [ meaning Ibraaheem peace be upon him] used to seek refuge with Allaah for Ismaa’eel and Is’haaq with these words:

A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah”

“ I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye.”
(al-Bukhaari)

And he Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam also taught the Sahaabah how to read ruqyah on themselves.

When one Sahaabi was suffering from pain, the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“Put your hand on the part of your body where you feel pain and say ‘Bismillaah three times, then say seven times, ‘A’oodhu bi ‘izzat-illaah wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajid wa uhaadhir.”

“I seek refuge in the glory and power of Allaah from the evil of what I feel and worry about.” (Muslim)

In at-Tirmidhi, it says:
“He said, I did that, and Allaah took away what I had been suffering, and I kept on enjoining my family and others to do that.”
(at-Tirmidhi -saheeh by al-Albaani)

And so this proves that ruqyah is very much a part of our Deen and we should utilize this means as a healing for our sicknesses.

 Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen said:
Ruqyah is of four types:

- that which is mentioned in the Sunnah – it is prescribed and mustahabb to use it as ruqyah;

-that which is shirk or bid‘ah (an innovation) – it is haram (impermissible) to use it as ruqyah;

- that which is a permissible duaa in which there is no shirk or bid‘ah, but it is not something that was narrated from the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam.
It is permissible to use this as ruqyah.

Hence the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said concerning ruqyah:
“There is nothing wrong with it so long as it is not shirk.”
(Fatawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb)

Shaikh Assim al-Hakeem said:
“Ruqyah in Islam is the recitation of the Qur’aan seeking the refuge in Allaah, remembrance and supplications that are used as  a means of treating sicknesses  and other problems as the Qur’aan is a source of healing.

This can be done to cure evil eye, possessions of Jinn, envy and magic.

The secret behind this is that one puts his full trust, reliance  and dependance in Allaah, the source of all healing and cure.
The Sunnah is to do it in odd numbers.
It is permissible to have it done to you without asking for it and it is also permissible to ask someone to do it for you, but this is not recommended.”

*How to perform Ruqyah*?

Shaikh Assim said:
“You can recite Ruqyah on yourself by gathering the palms of your hands and reciting the Aayaat into them and then blow in your hands and wipe the area that is ill and hurting you.
You can also bring zam zam water preferably and recite 3, 5 or 7 times the following over it and blow every time you recite it:
Al Fatiha, Ayatul Kursy, the last 2 verses of Suratul Baqarah and the last 3 Surah of the Quran.
You can add to that any Prophetic Dua’a and blow on it.
Drink from this water in the morning , in the afternoon and before going to bed and also you can wipe with it over the places that hurt you.”
