540. Debt

Debt is a very serious matter

By Asma bint Shameem

Many people have adopted a very casual approach to being in debt and  take out loans, not for some urgent need, but because they want to unnecessarily keep up with others in buying bigger homes, faster cars, more furniture or clothes or other temporary luxuries of this life.

But taking loans and being in debt is a GRAVE matter.

Islaam takes the matter of debt very seriously and warns against it and urges the Muslim to avoid it as much as possible.

And I am NOT talking about taking an “interest based” loan. That is forbidden for sure.

The kind of loan I am talking about is one WITHOUT interest, one that does NOT involve Ribaa;
The kind that is *allowed*, yet *discouraged* in Islaam.

And yet, we don’t see it as such.

1) The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to seek protection from it

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to say in his prayer:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْمَأْثَمِ وَالْمَغْرَمِ

“Allaahumma inni a’oodhi bika min al-ma’tham wa’l-maghram

“O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from sin and heavy debt.”

Someone said to him: “How often you seek refuge from heavy debt!”

He said: “When a man gets into debt, he speak and tells lies, and he makes a promise and breaks it.”
(al-Bukhaari and Muslim).

 2) The person in debt will not enter Jannah until the debt is paid off!

Muhammad ibn Jahsh radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“We were sitting with the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam when he raised his head towards the sky, then he put his palm on his forehead and said:

“Subhaan-Allaah!

What a strict issue has been revealed to me!”

We remained silent and were afraid. The following morning I asked him:
“O Messenger of Allaah, what is this strict issue that has been revealed?”

He said,
“By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if a man were killed in battle for the sake of Allaah, then brought back to life, then killed and brought back to life again, then killed, and he owed a debt, he would not enter Jannah until his debt was paid off.” (al-Nasaa’i- hasan by al-Albaani)

3) The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) didn’t pray his Janazah

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) did not lead the funeral prayer for someone who had died owing three dinars, until Abu Qataadah radhi Allaahu anhu said:

“O Allah's Messenger! Lead his funeral prayer, and I will pay his debt." So, he led the salat (prayer).”
(al-Bukhaari)

4) Freedom from debt makes entry into Jannah EASY

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“Whoever dies free from three things – arrogance, cheating and debt – will enter Jannah.”
(al-Tirmidhi (1572); saheeh by al-Albaani)

5) The soul of the one in debt is suspended

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said:

“Your companion is being detained by his debt.” (Abu Dawood- hasan by al-Albaani).

And he said:
“The soul of the believer is held hostage by his debt in his grave until it is paid off.”
(at-Tirmidhi: saheeh by al-Albaani)

Explaining this hadeeth al-Suyooti said:
“It (soul) is detained and kept from reaching its noble destination.

Al-‘Iraaqi said:
“No judgment is passed as to whether it will be saved or doomed until it is determined whether his debt will be paid off or not.”

Statements of Sahaabah regarding debt

Umar ibn al-Khattaab said:
“Beware of debt, for it starts with worry and it ends with war.”
(Maalik in al-Muwatta).

And Ibn ‘Umar said:
“O Humraan, fear Allaah and do not die in debt, lest it be taken from your good deeds when there will be no dinars and no dirhams.”

When is taking a loan permissible?

The Ulama warn us about how difficult the issue of debt is, and that it should not be undertaken except in cases of necessity.

Based on this, there are three conditions for debt to be permissible:

1- The borrower should be determined to repay it.

2- It should be known or thought most likely that he is able to repay it,

3- It should be for something that is permissible according to Sharee’ah.

Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said:
“The debt for which a person will be kept out of Paradise – and Allaah knows best – is that for which he left behind enough to pay it off but he did not leave instructions to that effect, or he was able to pay it off but did not do so, or he took the loan for some unlawful or extravagant matter and died without having paid it off.

As for the one who took a loan for something lawful because he was poor, and he died without leaving behind anything to pay it off, Allaah will not keep him from Paradise because of it, in sha Allaah.”

So take a loan only when absolutely necessary.

And if you are in a situation of debt right now, try your utmost best to pay off your debts as soon as possible.

Strive hard to pay it off, put your trust in Allaah, and pray to Him to make it easy for you to pay off your debt.

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said:
“The one who takes people’s wealth intending to pay it back, Allaah will pay it back for him, and the one who takes it intending to destroy it, Allaah will destroy him.”
(al-Bukhaari).

There are a number of duaas in the Sunnah that the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to make to help him stay away from all kinds of debt and to pay off any debts a person may have.

We should try and read those duaas and do our best to pay off abt debts we may have, as soon as possible

And Allaah knows best

539. What To Do With Beggars?

By Asma bint Shameem

Begging unnecessarily is haraam.

*Proof*

Qabeesah ibn Mukhaariq al-Hilaali radhi Allaahu anhu
said:
“I incurred a debt (in order to reconcile between two parties) and I came to the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam to ask him (for help) with it.

He said:
“Stay with us until the zakaah comes, and we will order that something be given to you.”

Then he said:
“O Qabeesah, asking for help is not permissible except in one of three cases:

1. A man who has incurred a debt (in order to reconcile between two parties), for whom it is permissible to ask for help until he has paid it off, then he should refrain;

2. A man who has been stricken by a calamity that has destroyed all his wealth, for whom it is permissible to ask for help until he gets enough to get by – or he gets enough to meet his basic needs;

3. And a man who is stricken by poverty and three men of wisdom among his people acknowledge that So and so has been stricken by poverty, then it becomes permissible for him to ask for help until he gets enough to get by – or to meet his basic needs.

Apart from these cases asking for help, O Qabeesah, is *haraam* and the one who begs is consuming something haraam.”
(Muslim amd others)

And the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
"The person keeps on begging until he comes on the Day of Resurrection with a face without any bit of flesh." (Muslim)

And he said:
“Whoever asks of people to accumulate wealth (meaning he doesn’t really need it) is asking for a live coal”
(al-Bukhaari, Muslim)

So it’s obvious that unnecessarily asking people for money or anything else is not allowed.

The people we see on the streets in Pakistan, India, Saudi etc are not poor people who’re in need of money.

Rather, the vast majority of them are *professional beggars* that prey on the compassion and mercy of innocent people who want to help the poor, out of fear of Allaah and they don’t want to turn the “Saa’il” away.

Such people do *not* deserve our money or even our sympathies.

They have made begging a *profession* and are *too lazy* to go out and work for a halaal living.

We shouldn’t be giving such people anything because if we do give them money, we’re indirectly encouraging them to continue this evil.

Allaah says:

“Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is Severe in punishment.”
 (Surah al-Ma’edah:2)

And Allaah says:

“Whosoever intercedes for a good cause will have the reward thereof, and whosoever intercedes for an evil cause will have a share in its burden. And Allaah is Ever All-Able to do (and also an All-Witness to) everything.“
(Surah an-Nisaa:85)

*Another point*

If you don’t give these beggars any money, and they start cursing you, don’t be scared.  It’s *nothing* to worry about.

When they curse you, they’re not harming you at all.

Actually they’re cursing *their own selves.*

That’s because they’re not upon the Haqq in their demands and they have no right to ask you of your money *unless they are really in need*.
And that’s not much likely.

The Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:
“Verily, when a servant curses something, the curse rises to the heaven and the gates of heaven close upon it. It turns right and left and if it does not find a place to go, it will return to that which was cursed only if it deserved to be curse; *otherwise the curse will return upon the one who made it.”*
(Abu Dawood- Hasan by al-Albaani )

And Ali ibn Abi Talib radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“Those who curse others are themselves cursed.” (Al-Adab Al-Mufrad- hasan)

So *unless* it seems to you that they’re *genuine* and *deserving* of your help, you shouldn’t be giving them any money.
And don’t worry about their duaas against you.
It can’t harm you because you’re not doing anything wrong.

Instead of giving to these charlatan beggars, help your own poor relatives before anyone else.
Give sadaqah to those who’re truly deserving of your money.
Or donate to a reliable organization.

And Allaah knows best

538. Can I Make Up Ramadhaan Fast In The Last Half Of Shabaan?

By Asma bint Shameem

*I have a few days of Fardh fasts left from last Ramadhaan that I need to make up.*
*Can I make them up even in the last half of Sha’baan?*

ANSWER
It’s true that the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“When Sha’baan is halfway through, do not fast.”
(Abu Dawood, at-Tirmidhi - saheeh by al-Albaani)

This is a GENERAL prohibition and it is *disliked* to fast in the second half of Sha’baan for a person who’s not used to fasting, in case he becomes weak before Ramadhaan starts.

*However*, there are *EXCEPTIONS* to this prohibition such as:

- if a person is in the HABIT of fasting regularly like Mondays and Thursdays etc

- if a person has to MAKE UP a *missed* fast

In these situations it’s ALLOWED for us to fast in the second half of Sha’baan so that we can quickly make up any obligatory fasts that we may owe before the next Ramadhaan comes up.

Imaam an-Nawawi said regarding this issue:
“If a person has to make up a day from Ramadhaan, then he has to fast it, (even in the last half of Sha’baan) because the time left for him to make it up has become very short.” (al-Majmoo’ (6/399)

The scholars said:
“Making up missed Ramadhaan fasts may be done at any time but the majority of scholars limited it to a specific time frame within which they must be made up, which is before the next Ramadhaan begins, because of the words of ‘Aa’ishah radhi Allaahu anhaa: “I would owe missed Ramadhaan fasts but I would not be able to make them up except in Sha’baan, because of my duties towards the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam.”

This is similar to *prayer*, which should not be delayed until the time for the next prayer comes.”
(al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah (28/76)

You see, the obligatory fasts are a kind of DEBT that we owe our Rabb, Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala.

*Isn’t it better to return the debt to the Lender as soon as possible?*

So go ahead and make up any days that you have leftover before the upcoming Ramadhaan even if you have to fast in the last two weeks of Sha’baan.
CLEAR your DEBT with your Rabb.

And Allaah knows best.

537. Breaking Of Fardh Salaah

We shouldn’t break our fardh Salaah unless there’s an emergency or urgent need etc

That’s the default.

As for breaking the voluntary Salaah, the matter is more flexible.

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam allowed us to break our prayer in case we see a snake or scorpion.

He said :
“Kill the two black ones during prayer, the snake and the scorpion.”
(Ibn Maajah: saheeh by Ibn Hibbaan).

This shows that we may stop our prayer in case of an emergency.

Shaikh Ibn Baaz said;
“In the case of an obligatory prayer, if it is something important or necessary, and there is the fear of missing it, it is also o.k. to stop the prayer, and to repeat it from the beginning.”
[Majmmo’ Fataawa Wa Maqaalaat Muntawwi’ah Li Samaahat, 11/108]

And the scholars also said:
“With regard to interrupting it (the prayer) for a legitimate, justifiable reason, that is prescribed. The prayer may be interrupted to kill a snake and the like, because it is enjoined to kill them, or for fear of losing some valuable property belonging to oneself or to someone else, or to help one who is in an emergency situation, or to alert one who is heedless or sleeping that the snake is heading towards him, and it is not possible to alert him by saying “Subhaan-Allah!”, or interrupting the fast to save one who is drowning, or out of fear for oneself or one’s nursing infant.”
[al-Mawsoo‘ah al-Fiqhiyyah al-Kuwaitiyyah (34/51)]

If you broke your fardh prayer because of a legitimate reason, but you didn’t break your wudhu then there’s no need to renew your wudhu.

You will only renew wudhu in case you break it.

536. Khula

Khula may be taken for any valid reason that makes it impossible for the wife to continue living with her husband.

Some of the valid reasons for asking for khula were explained by Shaikh Ibn Jibreen.

He said:
“If a woman dislikes her husband’s treatment of her – for example, he is over-strict, hot-tempered or easily-provoked, or gets angry a lot, or criticizes her and rebukes her for the slightest mistake or shortcoming, then she has the right of khula’ [female-instigated divorce].

If she dislikes his physical appearance because of some deformity or ugliness, or because one of his faculties is missing, she has the right of khula’.

If he is lacking in religious commitment – for example, he doesn’t pray, or neglects to pray in jamaa’ah, or does not fast in Ramadaan without a proper excuse, or he goes to parties where haraam things are done, such as fornication, drinking alcohol and listening to singing and musical instruments, etc. – she has the right of khula’.

If he deprives of her of her rights of spending on her maintenance, clothing and other essential needs, when he is able to provide these things, then she has the right to ask for khula’.

If he does not give her her conjugal rights and thus keep her chaste because he is impotent (i.e. unable to have intercourse), or because he does not like her, or he prefers someone else, or he is unfair in the division of his time [i.e., among co-wives], then she has the right to ask for khula’.”

And Allaah knows best.

535. Is It Better For Me To Pray Qiyaam Alone Or In Jama'ah?

By Asma bint Shameem

It depends on the situation.

1. Scenario #1: IF IT'S RAMADHAAN

For MEN:
It's better to pray in Jama'ah.
That's because the Prophet
Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam  himself led the people in Qiyaam in Ramadhaan for a few days.

He also said:
“Whoever prays qiyaam – i.e., Taraweeh – with the imam until he finishes, it will be recorded as if he spent the whole night in prayer.”  (at-Tirmidhi -- saheeh by al-Albaani)

For WOMEN:
It's BETTER to pray qiyaam or ANY Salaah at home UNLESS it gives her more khushoo' to pray in the masjid. In that situation, there's nothing wrong with her praying with the Jama'ah as long she's covered properly.

The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:
"Do not prevent your women from going to the masjid, even though their houses are better for them." (Abu Dawud -- saheeh by al-Albaani)

And he said:
"A woman's prayer in her house is better than her prayer in her courtyard, and her prayer in her bedroom is better than her prayer in her house." (Abu Dawud-- saheeh by al-Albaani)

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
"It is better for her to pray Taraweeh at home, but if praying in the masjid is more motivating for her and helps her to focus better, and if she prays at home she fears that she may neglect her prayer, then in this case the mosque may be better." (al-Liqa’ ash-Shahri)

2.  Scenario #2: IF IT'S NOT RAMADHAAN:

If it's not Ramadhaan then the scholars say it's a BID'AH to gather together for qiyaam, on a regular basis, irrespective whether you're a man or a woman, UNLESS it happens spontaneously and is not preplanned.

Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen said:
“If people want to gather to perform Qiyaam al-Layl in the masjid in congregation at times other than Ramadhaan, this is a kind of bid’ah.

But there is nothing wrong with a person praying it in congregation at times other than Ramadhaan in his house occasionally, because the Messenger Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam led Ibn ‘Abbaas, Ibn Mas’ood and Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamaan in congregation in his house. But he did not do that as a regular Sunnah (Sunnah raatibah) and he did not do it in the masjid.
(al-Sharh al-Mumti’ part 4, p. 82)

Shaikh Salih al-Munajjid said:
“It should be noted that this jamaa’ah (prayer in congregation) which takes place at times other than Ramadhaan should not happen by agreement or prior announcement.
If it so happens that a Muslim sees another Muslim praying Qiyaam al-Layl and he joins him without prior agreement – as happened in the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Abbaas, for example, when he woke up and joined the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam one night – there is nothing wrong that. But if it is a meeting by prior agreement to perform Qiyaam al-Layl on a regular basis, almost every night – as described in the question – this is bid’ah.”
(Islamqa Fatwa # 21210)

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
“With regard to a group agreeing to meet on a certain night to pray qiyaam al-layl, this is bid’ah, because praying qiyaam in congregation is not prescribed, unless that happens occasionally without prior agreement and unintentionally, as happened with the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam with ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas radhi Allaahu anhumaa.”
(Fataawa al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen)

534. Surah al-Kahf And The Dajjaal

By Asma bint Shameem

The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam instructed us to read Surah al-Kahf every Friday.

And he also told us to memorize certain Aayaat of this Noble Surah to seek Allaah’s protection from the trial of the Dajjaal.

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the False Messiah.”

In another narration, “…from the last ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf.” (Muslim)

And he Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:
“Whoever among you sees him (the Dajjaal), let him recite against him the opening verses of Surah al-Kahf.”  (Muslim).

So who is this Dajjaal after all?

What does he look like?

Where is he right now?

How to protect ourselves from his fitnah?

To answer all these questions, we must refer back ONLY to the Qur’aan and *authentic* ahaadeeth, since this is a matter of the Unseen.

And we can only say about the Unseen that which is revealed to us from the Qur’aan and authentic ahaadeeth.

So what does our Deen say about the Dajjaal?

The meaning of the word ad-Dajjaal

The scholars said:
“The root dajala means to mix. The word dajala is used to mean deliberately confusing matters and being vague and ambiguous.
The Dajjaal is the one who speaks in vagaries, who tells many lies and deceives many people.

The word “Dajjaal” became a title given to the lying, one-eyed, false messiah.

The Dajjaal is so called because he will conceal his kufr from the people by lying to them, deceiving them and confusing them.”

Also the word ad-dajal which means falsehood, because the Dajjaal is the one who is extreme in ad-dajal, falsehood, because he is a great liar to the extent that he will claim that he is Allaah.

The belief of Ahl as-Sunnah wal Jama’ah about the Dajjaal:

Our belief as Muslims (Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah) is that the False Messiah, the Anti-Christ, the Maseeh ad-Dajjaal is REAL.

He is a human being and he exists as we speak.

He will emerge when Allaah allows him to emerge.

He is the biggest fitnah mankind will every face.

He will spread this fitnah (tribulation) across the earth and will cause great chaos, confusion and falsehood.

He will be one-eyed and the word ‘kaafir’ or the letters ‘ka’-‘fa’-‘ra’ will be written between his eyes.

He will claim Divinity.

Eesa Alaiyhis-Salaam will eventually kill him at Ludd (Lod).

The biggest trial for mankind

The greatest trial (fitnah) to hit mankind on earth is the fitnah of the False Messiah, ad-Dajjaal.

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam warned us about him and every believer must equip and prepare himself against this evil with sound knowledge, correct aqeedah and strong faith.

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“It is other than the Dajjaal that I fear for you. If he comes forth while I am among you, I shall contend with him on your behalf, but if he comes forth when I am not among you, each person must contend with him on his own behalf, and Allaah  will take care in looking after every Muslim even after I have gone. Those of you who live up to his time should recite before him the opening verses of Surat al–Kahf, for they are your protection from his trial.” (Saheeh Muslim)

And he said:
“No Prophet was sent but he warned his people about the one-eyed liar. He is one-eyed, but your Lord is not one-eyed, and between his eyes will be written ‘kaafir.’” (al-Bukhaari)

The Description of ad-Dajjaal

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“I have told you so much about the Dajjaal that I fear you will not understand. The Dajjaal will be a short man, pigeon-toed, with curly hair. He will be one-eyed, with his eye neither prominent nor sunken. If you become confused about him, then remember that your Lord is not one-eyed.” (Abu Dawood — saheeh by al-Albaani)

And he said:
‘… as for the false messiah, he will be one-eyed, with a wide forehead and broad upper chest, and he will be hunchbacked…’” (Ahmad 7564)

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam also said:
‘The Dajjaal will be one-eyed, blind or defective in his left eye, with thick hair. He will have with him a paradise and a hell, but his hell will be a paradise and his paradise will be a hell.’” (Muslim)

“Written between his eyes will be ‘kaaf faa’ raa’.’” (Muslim)

Hudhayfah radhi Allaahu anhu reported:
“This will be read by every believer, literate or illiterate.” (Muslim)

And he said:
‘‘From the time of the creation of Adam until the Hour begins, there will never be a bigger creation than the Dajjaal.’” (Muslim, 5239).

The Dajjaal will not have any children:

Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri radhi Allaahu anhu described what happened between him and Ibn Sayyaad, who said to him: “Did you not hear the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam say that he will have no children? …” Abu Sa’eed said, ‘I said, ‘Yes…’” (Muslim, no. 5209)

Where is the Dajjaal now?

The Dajjaal is very much alive and present on earth as we speak.

He’s been here for a while.

He was even present at the time of the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam.

But where is he exactly right now?

All we know is that he’s at some island, according to the authentic  hadeeth of Fatimah bint Qays and Tameem ad-Daari radhi Allaahu anhumaa. (Saheeh Muslim 2942)

But we don’t know “which specific island” he’s at.

There are lots of opinions about that but there’s nothing that can be said for sure as a solid proof.

All we know is that he’s at an island and he’s waiting for the time when Allaah will allow him to come out.

Faatimah bint Qays radhi Allaahu anhaa said that after the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam led the people in prayer, he said:
“By Allaah, I did not call you together for an exhortation or for a warning. I have called you together because Tameem al-Daari was a Christian and he came and swore allegiance and became Muslim, and told me something which agrees with what I was telling you about the Dajjaal (false messiah).

He told me that he sailed in a ship with thirty men of Lakhm and Judhaam and they were tossed by the waves of the sea for a month.

Then they came to an island at sunset. They sat in a small rowing-boat and landed on that island.

They were met by a beast with a great deal of hair and they could not distinguish his face from his back because he was so hairy.

They said:
‘Woe to you, what are you?’

It said:
‘I am al-Jassaasah.’

They said:
What is al-Jassaasah?’

It said:
‘O people, go to this man in the monastery for he keen to know about you.’

He (the narrator) said:
When it named a man for us we were afraid of it lest it be a devil.

Then we set off, rushing, until we came to that monastery, where we found the hugest man we had ever seen, bound strongly in chains with his hands tied to his neck and his legs bound from the knees to the ankles with iron shackles.

We said:
‘Woe to you, who are you?’

He said:
‘You will soon find out about me; tell me who you are.’

They said:
‘We are people from Arabia who embarked on a ship, but the sea became wild and the waves tossed us about for one month, then they brought us to this island of yours. We took to the rowing-boats and landed on this island. We were met by a beast with a great deal of hair and we could not tell his front from his back because he was so hairy.

We said:
Woe to you, what are you?

It said:
I am al-Jassaasah.

We said:
What is al-Jassaasah?

It said:
Go to this man in the monastery for he is keen to know about you.
So we came rushing to you and we fled from it because we could not be sure that it was not a devil.’

He (that chained person) said:
‘Tell me about the date-palm trees of Baysaan.’

We said:
‘What do you want to know about them?’

He said:
‘I am asking you whether these trees bear fruit.’

We said:
‘Yes.’

He said:
‘Soon they will not bear fruit.’

He said:
‘Tell me about the lake of Tabariyyah’

We said:
‘What do you want to know about it?’

He said:
‘Is there water in it?’

They said:
‘There is a great deal of water in it.’

He said:
‘Soon it will dry up.’

Then he said:
‘Tell me about the spring of Zughar (which is in the south of Syria).’

They said:
‘What do you want to know about it?’

He said:
‘Is there water in the spring and do the people grow crops with the water of the spring?’

We said to him:
‘Yes, there is plenty of water in it and the people grow crops with its water.’

He said:
‘Tell me about the Prophet if the unlettered; what has he done?’

We said:
‘He has left Makkah and has settled in Yathrib (Madeenah).’

He said:
‘Do the Arabs fight against him?’

We said:
‘Yes.’

He said:
‘How did he deal with them?’

We told him that he had prevailed over the Arabs in his vicinity and they had shown obedience to him.

He said to us:
‘Has it really happened?’

We said:
‘Yes.’

He said:
‘If it is so that is better for them that they show obedience to him.

Now I will tell you about myself.
I am the Dajjaal and soon I will be given permission to emerge.
So I will come out and travel in the land, and will not spare any town but I will stay for forty nights, except Makkah and Taybah (Madeenah).

They are both forbidden to me; every time I try to enter one of them,
I will be met by an angel with a sword in his hand, who will bar my way, and on every route there will be angels guarding it.’

She said:
Then the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam  struck the minbar with his staff and said:
“This is Taybah, this is Taybah, this is Taybah,” meaning Madeenah.
“Did I not tell you this before?”

The people said:
 Yes.

[The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:]
“I liked the story of Tameem because it agrees with what I used to tell you about him and about Makkah and Madeenah.
But he is in the Syrian Sea (Mediterranean) or the Yemeni Sea (Arabian Sea).

No, rather he is in the east, he in the east, he is in the east,” and he pointed towards the east with his hand.

She said:
I memorized this from the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam.”
[Saheeh Muslim (2942)]

From where will the Dajjaal appear?

The Dajjaal will appear from the east, from Khurasaan, from among the Jews of Isfahaan.

Faatimah bint Qays said that the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said concerning the Dajjaal:
“He will (emerge) from the direction of the Syrian sea or from the direction of the Yemeni sea… No, rather from the east…” – and he pointed towards the east.  (Muslim, 5228).

Abu Bakr radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“The Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam told us:

“The Dajjaal will emerge from a land in the east called Khurasaan.” (al-Tirmidhi 2163; saheeh by al-Albaani, Saheeh al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer 3398).

Anas radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“The Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said: ‘The Dajjaal will emerge from among the Jews of Isfahaan, and with him will be seventy thousand Jews, wearing crowns.’” (Narrated by Ahmad, no. 12865).

Places which the Dajjaal will never enter

The Dajjaal will travel quickly throughout the earth and enter every place EXCEPT Makkah or Madeenah.

From the hadeeth of Faatimah bint Qays radhi Allaahu anhaa:

The Dajjaal said:
‘I almost have permission to emerge. Then I will emerge and will travel throughout the earth for forty days, and I shall not leave any town without entering it, apart from Makkah and Madeenah, which I will be prevented from entering because every time I try to enter,  there will be an angel with an unsheathed sword in his hand, preventing me from entering. On every gate there will be angels defending them.’” (Muslim 5228)

Who will follow ad-Dajjaal?

Most of the followers of the Dajjaal will be from the Jews, Persians and Turks, and WOMEN!

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“The followers of the Dajjaal from among the Jews of Isfahaan will number seventy thousand, wearing heavy, striped garments.” (Muslim 5237) “He will be followed by people with faces like burnished shields.” (al-Tirmidhi 2136).

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam also said:
“The Dajjaal will come to this pond in Marriqanaat – a valley in Madeenah – and most of those who go out to him will be women, until a man will come to his mother in law, his mother, his daughter, his sister and his aunt, and will tie them up strongly for fear that they will go out to him.” (Ahmad 5099)

The fitnah of the Dajjaal

The fitnah of the Dajjaal will be the greatest fitnah of all time; from the time of Adam Alaiyhis-Salaam until the day of Judgment.

That’s because the Dajjaal will cause such chaos and confusion due to the miracles he will be able to perform but that all will be nothing but deception and lies.

Allaah will enable him to perform such miracles as a test for the people and that will bedazzle and impress people so much so that they will even believe that he is Allaah.

The authentic ahaadeeth tell us that he will have a paradise and a hell with him, but his paradise will be his hell and his hell will be his paradise. He will have rivers of water and mountains of bread.

He will command the sky to send down rain, and it will rain, and he will command the earth to bring forth vegetation and it will do so.

The treasures of the earth will follow him, and he will travel rapidly, like clouds driven by the wind. And he will do other extraordinary feats.

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
‘The Dajjaal will be one-eyed, blind in his left eye, and will have thick hair. He will have a paradise and a hell with him, but his paradise will be a hell and his hell will be a paradise.’” (Muslim 5222)

And he said:
‘I know what the Dajjaal will bring with him: he will have two rivers flowing.

One will clearly look like water and the other will clearly look like blazing fire. If any one of you sees that, let him choose the river which looks like fire, then let him close his eyes and lower his head and drink from it, for it will be cool water.’” (Muslim 5223)

“He will come to some people and call them, and they will believe in him and respond to him. Then he will command the sky to rain, and the earth to bring forth vegetation, and their cattle will come back to them in the evening, with their humps very high, and their udders full of milk, and their flanks stretched. Then he will come to another people and will call them, but they will reject him. So he will leave them and they will be stricken with famine, with none of their wealth in their hands. He will pass by ruins and will say, ‘Bring forth your treasure!’ – and the treasure will follow him like a swarm of bees. Then he will call a man who is brimming with youth, and will strike him with a sword and cut him in two, then (he will put the pieces apart from one another) the distance of an archer from his target. Then he will call him, and the young man will come forward smiling, with his face shining.” (Muslim 5228)

“Part of his fitnah will be that he will say to a Bedouin, Do you think that if I resurrect your father and mother for you that you will testify that I am your lord?’

He will say,
‘Yes.’

So two devils will appear to him in the image of his father and mother, saying, ‘O my son, follow him for he is your lord.’”
(Ibn Maajah 4067; saheeh by al-Albaani, Saheeh al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer, hadeeth 7752)

” The Dajjaal will say (to the people):
“What do you think – if I kill this man then bring him back to life, will you have any doubts?”
They will say, “No.”

So he will kill him, then bring him back to life.

Then he (the believing man) will say, “By Allaah, I have never been more sure about you than I am today.
The Dajjaal will want to kill him but will not be permitted to. “
(al-Bukhaari, no. 6599)

How long will the Dajjaal live for?

The Sahaabah said:
“O Messenger of Allaah, how long will he stay on the earth?”

He said:
“Forty days, a day like a year, a day like a month, a day like a week, and the rest of the days like your days.”

We said:
O Messenger of Allaah, on that day which is like a year, will the prayers of one day be sufficient for us?

He said:
“No. Work out the time (for prayer).”  [Muslim (2937)]

That shows that the people at that time would have to calculate the times of the five daily prayers according to a regular 24 hour day.
And pray accordingly.

The Council of Senior Scholars said explaining the above hadeeth:

“He Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam did not regard that day that will be like a year as being a single day in which five prayers would be sufficient, rather he enjoined praying five prayers every twenty-four hours, and he commanded them to space them out during the time based on the times on an ordinary day in their country. “
[Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz (15/292/300)]

The death of the Dajjaal

The fitnah of the Dajjaal will be very severe and most of the people of the world will follow him except those whom Allaah will protect.

Then Allaah will bring down Eess Alaiyhis-Salaam from the heavens and he will kill the Dajjaal.

The scholars said:
“The Dajjaal will die at the hands of the Messiah ‘Eesa Alaiyhis-Salaam as is indicated by the saheeh ahaadeeth.

The Dajjaal will appear on earth and will gain many followers, spreading his fitnah far and wide. No one will escape his fitnah except a few of the believers.

At that point, ‘Eesa ibn Maryam will descend to the eastern minaret in Damascus, and the believing slaves of Allaah will gather around him. He will lead them towards the Dajjaal, who at the time of the descent of ‘Eesa will be heading for Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem).
‘Eesa will catch up with him at the gate of Ludd (Lod), a place in Palestine near Bayt al-Maqdis.

When the Dajjaal sees him, he will start to melt like salt melting in water, but ‘Eesa Alaiyhis-Salaam will say to him, “I have some business with you, you will not get away from me.”

Then he will catch up with him and will kill him with his spear.
His followers will flee, pursued by the Muslims, who will kill them, and trees and rocks will say, ‘O Muslim, O slave of Allaah, there is Jew behind me – come and kill him!” – apart from the gharqad (box thorn), for it is one of the trees of the Jews.”
(Islamqa Fatwa # 8806)

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“… Every kaafir who will smell the fragrance of (‘Eesa) will die, and his fragrance will reach as far as he will be able to see. He will then search for him (the Dajjaal) until he catches up with him at the gate of Ludd, where he will kill him.”

And he said:
“The Dajjaal will emerge at a time when religious commitment is low and knowledge has decreased… Then ‘Eesa ibn Maryam will descend just before dawn and will call people, saying, ‘O people, what is stopping you from coming out against this evil liar?’
They will say, ‘This man is a jinn’, then they will set out.

When they reach ‘Eesa ibn Maryam, the time for prayer will come the iqqamah will be given, and it will be said to him, ‘Go forward (to lead the prayer), O Spirit of Allaah.’

He will say,
‘Let your imaam go forward and lead you in prayer.’

When they have prayed fajr, they will go out to meet him (the Dajjaal) and when they see the liar, he will start to dissolve like salt in water. ‘Eesa will go to him and kill him.
Even the trees and rocks will call out, ‘O Spirit of Allaah, here is a Jew!’
And none of those who followed him will be left, they will all be killed.”
(Ahmad 14426).

How to protect yourself from the Dajjaal

1. Have CORRECT faith and sound knowledge about Islaam, including the correct understanding about the Dajjaal, Imaam Mahdi, Eesa Alaiyhis-Salaam and the signs before the Hour.

Follow only the authentic ahaadeeth and don’t fall for inauthentic narrations.

2. KNOW Allaah, your Rabb, His Beautiful Names and Perfect Attributes.

Know that the Dajjaal is a human being who will eat and drink, and that Allaah is far above that; the Dajjaal will be one-eyed but Allaah is not one-eyed; no one can see his Lord until he dies, but the Dajjaal will be seen by all people, believers and kaafirs alike, when he emerges.

3. LIVE the life of a practicing Muslim

Fear Allaah, pray on time, lead a life of uprightness and obedience to Allaah, fulfilling your faraa’idh (obligatory duties) and staying away from all haraam.

4. Make DUAA to Allaah to protect you from the fitnah of the Dajjaal, especially in your prayers.

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
‘When any one of you says Tashahhud, let him seek refuge with Allaah from four things, and say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

“Allaahumma inni a’oodhi bika min ‘adhaab jahannam wa min ‘adhaab al-qabri wa min fitnat il-mahyaa wa’l-mamaat wa min sharri fitnat al-maseeh al-dajjaal”

“O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the fitnah of the Dajjaal).’” (Muslim 924)

5. Memorize aayaat from Soorat al-Kahf.

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“Whoever among you sees him (the Dajjaal), let him recite against him the opening verses of Soorat al-Kahf.”  (Muslim 5228).

And he said:
“Whoever memorizes ten aayaat from the beginning of Soorat al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjaal” – i.e., from his fitnah.

Muslim said: “Shu’bah said, ‘from the end of al-Kahf.’

Hammaam said, ‘from the beginning of al-Kahf.’” (Muslim 1342)

6. if you hear about the Dajjaal, KEEP AWAY from him

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“Whoever hears of the Dajjaal, let him keep far away from him, for a man will come to him and think that he is telling the truth because of the wonders that are sent with him.”
[Ahmad (19118), Abu Dawood (3762) and al-Haakim (4/31)]

I ask Allaah to protect us all from the trials of ad-Dajjaal and save us from his fitan. Ameen.

533. Raising Of Children

The PRIMARY duty of a woman is to raise her children right and teach them to be good Muslims.

That’s the PRIMARY duty of a Muslimah.

Allaah will not ask us when we die, about our degrees or our careers.

Rather He will ask if we raised our kids in an Islaamic upbringing.

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock. A man is the shepherd of his household and is responsible for his flock. A woman is the shepherd of her husband’s household and is responsible for her flock…”
(al-Bukhaari and Muslim)

Each and every one of us will be asked about the one we were responsible for.

The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“Allaah will ask every person in a position of responsibility about that which was entrusted to him, whether he took care of it or was negligent, until He will ask a man about the members of his household.” (Ibn Hibbaan; saheeh by al-Albaani in Ghaayat al-Maraam, no. 271)

And if he or she fails in this responsibility, that’s a big sin.

The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:
“There is no person whom Allaah puts in charge of others, and when he dies he is insincere to his subjects, but Allaah will forbid Paradise to him.” (Muslim)

That’s why ibn Umar radhi Allaahu anhu said:
"Raise your children correctly, verily you are responsible for them and you will be questioned regarding your rearing of them." (Shu'ab al Eman 8295)

As for seeking knowledge of the Dunya, that’s not priority over her basic responsibilities.

And as for seeking knowledge of the *Deen*, as  long as the woman has basic knowledge of Islaam and is able to practice her Deen according to the teachings of the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam, that’s the basic requirement.

But if she can increase her knowledge of the Deen while not neglecting her basic responsibilities, then that’s the best thing.

532. Niqaab

Basically there are two opinions among the ulama about the niqaab.

One group says it’s mandatory based on evidences from the Qur’aan amd authentic Sunnah

But the other group says niqaab is not mandatory, rather it’s something mustahabb or recommended.

And they base their opinion on Qur’aan and authentic Sunnah as well.

Both these groups are ulama of Ahle Sunnah wal Jama’ah and both of these groups have valid points but the difference lies in how each group of ulama understood and interpreted these Aayaat and ahaadeeth.

And Allaah knows best about that.

What I personally advise my students is to always try and err on the side of caution and be on the safe side.
And that’s why I myself cover my face with niqaab.

But if someone follows the other opinion and decides not to cover the face but cover the hair and body only, then they’re allowed to do that.

And I cannot definitely say that they’re wrong.
Thats because covering the hair and body is what is basically required of a muslim woman and they’re doing that Alhamdulillaah.

531. Emotions

Things can be resolved with open communication without ‘emotions’ coming in the way.

Talk to him in a kind manner, explaining your situation

You can also have mediators from both sides of your families to clarify any misunderstandings that may have developed

Also the masjid Imaam or shaikh can intervene.

If not, and she cannot put up with it any more and things are out of control, she is allowed to separate from him although I would *not recommend that*.

If there’s any issue between the wife, and her in-laws, it should be resolved with forgiveness, love, kindness and understanding instead of keeping grudges and ill feelings.

The KEY to a good relationship is to work things out amicably, with love, compassion and wisdom.
And keep the best interest of the family at heart.

530. Taking PILLS To Prevent Your MENSES At HAJJ Or UMRAH

By Asma bint Shameem

Taking PILLS to prevent your MENSES at HAJJ or UMRAH

If you’re taking your pills to prevent your period while you’re at hajj, this is the advice I give you as a doctor.

1. DO NOT miss even a SINGLE dose.

2. Make SURE  you take the pills at the EXACT SAME TIME EVERY DAY.
Do NOT delay EVEN by an HOUR.
Otherwise you might start SPOTTING.

3. Keep in mind the TIME DIFFERENCE between your city and Saudi Arabia.

So if you live in the US, and you’re taking this pill every morning, that is EVENING time in Saudi.
Make sure you remember that, so that you can ADJUST the time of your pill accordingly.

4. Keep this time difference in mind even on the AIRPLANE.

Make sure to take this pill every 24 hours at the SAME time.

5. If you do experience spotting/discharge, DOUBLE the dose for the next couple of days or so.

6. If you forget to take the pill at its usual time, take it AS SOON as you remember.

7. If you get a colored discharge/spotting even though you were regularly taking the pills on time, DO NOT WORRY.

You can STILL pray and do Tawaaf and all other ibaadaat.

That’s because this discharge will be counted as “Istihaadhah”because you were taking the pills to PREVENT the menses.

Someone asked the scholars on Islamqa:
“A woman used PILLS to prevent menses so that she could do Hajj, but when she got TIRED she had some kind of brownish discharge.
What is the ruling on that?

They said:
”That does not affect anything*.

Umm ‘Atiyyah radhi Allaahu anhaa said:
“We used to not regard the yellowish or brownish discharge as being of any significance,” even if it was ongoing.

*So long as it is not PURE BLOOD, then it is of NO SIGNIFICANCE*.”
(Islamqa Fatwa # 109346)

And a woman asked Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen:
“I am a woman who tied her tubes to prevent birth and when I arrived to perform Umrah, I used pills to prevent menstruation.
A small amount of brown discharge came from me before Fajr after using the pills for a week and it was the time menstruation usually discharges
So is this brown discharge from menstruation or is this brown discharge from stress which occurs because I establish the night prayer? Knowing also that I have used these pills for two weeks and it has not affected me and there was no brown discharge?

Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen said:
“The answer to this long question is that this brown discharge *does NOT PREVENT the PRAYER nor FAST because it is NOT menstruation*.

Umm ‘Atiyyah radhi Allaahu anhaa said:
“After we were pure, we did not consider the yellow or muddy discharge to be anything (i.e. of the menses blood)” [al-Bukhari]

So we say to this female questioner to pray and fast and there is no blame upon you”.
