438. Ruqyah

 By Asma Bint Shameem

Unless you’re suffering from evil eye or magic and you’re reading Surah al-Baqarah as a form of “Ruqyah for *healing*, it’s not correct to read this Surah as a means of “protection”.

That’s because ruqyah is NOT done for *protection* ‘just in case’ IF I get sick.

Rather ruqyah is only read for HEALING if you’re SICK or suffering from black magic or evil eye etc

Reading the Ruqyah “just in case” to PREVENT disease or harm is like taking a painkiller in the morning “just in case” you get a headache later in the evening!

Someone asked Shaikh Assim al-Hakeem:
“Is it considered as an innovation if someone drinks ruqya water that he made himself every morning ?”

The shaikh said:
“ If he is not complaining from any illness, this would be an *innovation*.”

Someone asked Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen:
“What is the way to escape from these three evils (the evils of the darkness of night, the witches who blow on knots (cast spells), and the envier when he envies)?”

The Shaikh said:
“The way to relieve one's self from these evils is to attach his heart to his Lord, to entrust his affair to Him, to render absolute trust in Allahabad, and to use the legislative remembrances as a source of fortification and a means of protection for himself from the evil of these things.

During (these) latter times, witches and envious people and their likes have only increased because of heedlessness of Allaah, having weak reliance on Allaah, and not using the legislative remembrances (as a means) for protection.

Besides, we know that the legislative remembrances are an impenetrable fortress, more powerful than the barrier (built against) Gog and Magog!

However, with regret, many people know nothing of these remembrances. The one who knows them is neglectful of (saying) them, while the one who (actually) uses them utters them with an inattentive heart. All of this is a deficiency. If the people would only use these legal remembrances in a manner brought by the Legislation, they would experience safety from plenty of evil things.”
(Tafsir Surah Al-Falaq)

What we read of the duaas of the morning and evening adhkaar, or the adhkaar at bedtime etc (which includes Aayatul Kursi, the last two Aayaat of al-Baqarah, and the mu’awwidhaat), is ENOUGH for protection.

As long as
- we say our five daily prayers
- morning and evening adhkaar
- bedtime adhkaar
- other adhkaar esp when entering the home, entering the bathroom, taking off the clothes, eating with Bismillaah and the right hand etc
- wear hijaab
-stay away from all sins especially music
we should be fine.

And Allaah will protect us.
