4. What To Do Of Old Torn Pages Of Qur'an

By Asma Bint Shameem

I have some old torn pages of the Qur’aan. How should I dispose of them?

ANSWER

To dispose of old, torn pages of the Qur’aan or other pieces of paper that have Allaah’s Name on it, you can do three things.

1. BURN THEM

You can respectfully burn old, torn pages of the Qur’aan in a clean place.

PROOF:
When Uthmaan radhi Allaahu anhu consolidated the Qur’aan in the dialect of the Quraish, he ordered all the other copies of the Qur’aan to be burned respectfully. And that’s also what the other Sahaabah did.

2. BURY THEM

You can also bury them in a clean place making sure that there’s no chance of people walking over that area, to the best of your ability.

3. SHRED THEM

You can also use a paper shredder and shred such papers and pages so that the words are cut up finely and are no longer distinguishable.

Someone asked Shaikh Salih al-Munajjid about this issue. He said:
“They may be destroyed by burning or by cutting them up so that the verses of the Qur’aan and the name of Allaah disappear, or they may be buried.
If a part of the word remains there is no harm in that.
There are machines that cut paper into long, thin strips (i.e., shredders), which may be used for this purpose.”

And Allah knows best.
