38. Speech And Prayers At 'Arafat

When the sun has declined, the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam mounted his she-camel al Qaswa and went down into the valley. There he delivered magnificient speech confirming important rules of the Islamic Sharia and eliminating un- Islamic customs and practices.

After the speech Bilal pronounced the adhan and the iqamah

The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam led the  thuhr prayer, performing only two rak'ahs without reciting aloud- although it was Friday. Hence,  it is concluded from such an action that prayer so offered was not the two rak'ahs of the Friday prayer but the thuhr prayer for a traveler.

Immediately afterwards Bilal again recited the iqamah, and the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam led the asr prayer, performing again only two rak'ahs.

No voluntary prayer were offered between these two prayers.

And even those among the residents of Makkah  joined the other pilgrims in shortening and combining the two prayers.
