39. The Stay At 'Arafat

After the prayers the salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam mounted his she-camel and went to the plain of 'Arafat.

Standing near the rocks at the foot of the hill, he said:
"I stand here, but the whole of 'Arafah is a standing place."

Then he faced the qiblah, ans raising his hands up to the level of his chest, he supplicated earnestly until sunset and informed the people that the best supplication is that of the day of 'Arafah.

It is important to note that one should supplicate with full attention and humility, begging mercy of Allah, weeping and pleading, invoking His and seeking His forgiveness.

The Supreme Being will not disappoint His servants, allow their exertions to go to waste or deny them His favors on the day of 'Arafah. Shaytan never feels more dejected, crestfallen and humiliated than on the day of 'Arafah because it is then that the Almighty frees the maximum number of His slaves from the Fire.

Note

Many supplications have been fabricated under the name" supplication of 'Arafah". Therefore, every pilgrim should recite only those supplication which have come from the Qur'an or authentic hadith, Or he may supplicate for whatever he wishes in his own words. Along with supplication the pilgrim should recite Quran tasbih ["Subhan Allah"], takbeer ["Allahu Akbar"], talbiyah [Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk..."] and invoke blessings upon the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
