68. Brief Summary Of Hajj Rites


The rites of Hajj have been categorised here according to importance. 

Failure to perform an essential act renders the Hajj invalid. 

Failure to perform a required act makes a ransom necessary. 

There is no sin upon one who omits a sunnah act due to crowd or other problems. 

Furthermore, it is a duty to forego any sunnah which would lead to harming others, for such is unlawful and would prevent one from having the reward of a sinless Hajj.


1. Bathing and perfuming [sunnah] and then putting on the two ihram garments (for men) before reaching the meeqat [ required ].


2. Making the intention of ihram for only Hajj or only ' Umrah, or Hajj and 'Umrah together and entering the state of ihram accordingly - Women with menses or postnatal bleeding also enter into the state of a ihram [ required ].

3. Pronouncing the talbiyah [ sunnah ].

4. Performing tawaf of seven circuits around the Ka'bah [ required ].

5. Observing idhtiba and ramal in tawaf al-qudum ( for men ) [ sunnah ].

6. Saying ," Allahu Akbar" when opposite the Black Stone [ sunnah ].

7. Touching ar-Rukn al- Yamani and kissing the Black Stone (if possible) in each circuit of tawaf [ sunnah ].

8. Offering two rak'ahs of prayer after tawaf, reciting Surah al-Kafirun in the first rak'ah and Surah Al-ikhlas in the second rak'ah , and offering these two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible [ sunnah ].

9. Drinking Zamzam water and pouring it over the head [ sunnah ].

10. Upon ascending the Mount of as-Safa facing the Qiblah, declaring Allah's Unity, proclaiming His greatness and His uniqueness, and supplicating three times [ sunnah ].

11. Walking between as-Safa and al- Marwah seven times, finishing at al- Marwah [ required ].

12. Running between the two green markers between as-Safa and al-Marwah ( for men only ) [ sunnah ].

13. Standing on the Mount of al- Marwah and supplicating there as was done at as - Safa [ sunnah ].

14. Cutting the hair or shaving the head [ required ] thereby ending the state of a ihram - it is preferable at this point for the pilgrim of Hajj at-tamattu to cut his hair, with shaving being delayed until the completion of Hajj. However, the pilgrim of hajj al-qiran remains in ihram and does not shave or cut hair yet.

15. Entering the state of ihram for Hajj [ required ] on the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah ( the day of Tarwiyah ) [ Sunnah ] for pilgrims performing the tamattu or ifrad forms of Hajj - if not possible on the 8th ihram may be assumed earlier or even on the day of 'Arafah.

16. Proceeding to Mina and staying there for the night [ sunnah ] while offering the five obligatory prayers for that and night.

17. Leaving Mina for 'Arafat after sunrise. [ sunnah ] 

18. Stopping at Namirah on the outskirts of Arafat, listening to the Imam's speech [ sunnah ] and offering the congregational thuhr and asr prayers combined and shortened at the Namirah Masjid ( if possible).

19. Staying within the plain of Arafat at sometime between magrib and fajr of the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah [ Essential ].

20. Not fasting on the day of Arafat while in Arafat [ sunnah ].

21 Supplicating at 'Arafah with raised hands while facing the qiblah and repeating the talbiyah [ sunnah ].

22 Leaving Arafat for Muzdalifah calmly and patiently after sunset [ sunnah ].

23 Offering the obligatory prayers of Maghrib and isha combined in Muzdalifah with one adhan and two iqamahs without any sunnah prayers between them [ sunnah ]

24 Spending the night in Muzdalifah [ required ] and resting rather than praying [ sunnah ].

25. Offering the obligatory fajr prayer at early dawn [ sunnah ].

26. Standing near al- Mash'ar Al-Haram ( when possible ) facing the qiblah , saying "Allahu Akbar " ; praising Allah; and supplicating until daylight is clear [ sunnah ].

27. Leaving Muzdalifah before Sunrise [ sunnah ].

28 Proceeding quickly through the valley of Muhassir [ sunnah ].

29. Ceasing to recite the talbiyah at the commencement of throwing pebbles [ sunnah ].

30. Throwing seven pebbles at jamrat al-Aqabah [ required ] on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah after sunrise ( although it is allowed even after the decline of the sun ), using pebbles the size of pea and saying, "Allahu Akbar" upon throwing each pebble [ sunnah ].

31. Sacrificing an animal by the pilgrim of Hajj at-tamattu or hajj al-qiran or fasting three days during hajj and seven days upon returning home in the case of failure to perform the sacrifice [ required ].

32. Eating the meat of the sacrificed animal [ sunnah ].

33. Shaving the head ( beginning from the right side) [ sunnah] or cutting hair short [ one of these required ].

34. Wearing regular clothes and partially ending the state of ihram [ sunnah ] with the exception of marital relation [ still prohibited ]. 

35. Performing tawaf al-ifadhah [ essential ].

36. Praying two rak'ahs after tawaf [ sunnah ].

37. Drinking Zamzam water after tawaf [sunnah ].

38. Performing Sa'i between as- Safa and al- Marwah after the tawaf -ifadhah for the pilgrims of Hajj at- tamattu [ required ] - Pilgrims of hajj al-qiran and ifrad do not perform sai now unless they failed to do so after tawaf al- qudum.

39. Completely ending the state of ihram after tawaf al-Ifadhah [ all restrictions of ihram are hereby lifted ].

40. Returning to Mina by evening and staying there for the next three days , ayyam at-tashreeq or at least two days [ required ].

41. Throwing pebbles at the three jamrahs each day after the decline of the sun at noon [ required ].

42. Performing tawaf al-wada before departing for home [ required - except for women with menstrual or Post-partum bleeding ].
