50. Rami al - Jimar

Following the middle road from Muzdalifah the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam went to Jamrat al-'Aqabah.

Still riding this camel, he faced the jamrah in such a way that Makkah was on his and Mina was on his right.

He threw seven pebbles, saying, "Allahu Akbar" each time he threw one. He stopped  pronouncing the talbiyah at the commencement of the rami.

As illustrated through the Prophet's example, the pilgrim should keep in mind that pebbles are not to be thrown  until after sun rise of the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, except for those with a valid excuse.

Unfortunately, for the sake of convenience or due to a lack of knowledge, many pilgrims act against this tradition.

It is allowed to perform this rami in the afternoon; therefore those people who cannot perform rami before noon due to overcrowding should do so in the afternoon, taking advantage of this concession.

When the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was asked about the permissibility of doing so, he replied, "There is no harm."

With the throwing of the pebbles on the 10th, all of the restrictions of the state of a ihram are lifted except for marital relations, even though the pilgrim has not yet shaved his head or cut his hair.

Between the 10th and 13th  of Dhul-Hijjah the rami al-jimar should be performed as follows:

1.On the 10th after sunrise seven pebbles should be thrown only at- jamrat al-'Aqabah.

2. On the 11th, 12th and the 13 th after the sun has passed the meridian

seven pebbles should be thrown al- jamrat as-Sugra (the small jumrah ),
seven at al-jamrat ak-Wusta (the middle jamrah),
seven at at -jamrat al-Aqabah ( the large jamrah)
In all, 70 pebbles will have been thrown at the jumrahs; if one departs on the 12th, the number is 49.

After performing rami of the small jamrah, and the middle jamrah, the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam used to shift a little and face the qibla, supplicating for a long time.

But he did not supplicate after doing the rami of the large jamrah.
