48. Picking Up Pebbles

On his way from Muzdalifah the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam told bin al-Fadhl bin al- 'Abbas to pick up pebbles for him, and he did so, choosing seven small ones.

It is to be noted that there is no particular, fixed place for picking up the pebbles.

When al-Fadhl picked up seven small pebbles on the morning of 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:
"With the likes of these stones... And beware of exceeding the religious commands, because preceding communities were destroyed due to the excess brought into religion by them".

The pebble should be about the size of a pea, and pilgrims should never use their sandal, shoes or other objects to perform rami. Doing so is an act of ignorance.

Note:

It is observed nowadays that no sooner do people reach Muzdalifah than they run to pick up pebbles thinking that picking up pebbles in Muzdalifah only is the correct ritual of hajj. However, this concept has no validity. The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam illustrated that the pebbles maybe pick up at any place on the return from Muzdalifah except in the valley of Muhassir, where no one should stop. Unused pebbles  can even be pick up in Mina.

Additionally, according to the sunnah, only seven pebbles should be pick up on 10th of Dhul- Hijjah on the way from Muzdalifah, and this pebbles should be thrown at the largest jamrah (jamrat al- 'Aqabah). It is contrary to the sunnah, as well, to wash the pebbles or to give them any undue importance.
