80. At - Tawwab

The Acceptor of Repentance, The Oft-Forgiving, The Acceptor of our Return

The One who beckons for our return. The One who repeatedly turns mankind toward repentance.

The One who forgives those who return to goodness. The One who restores to grace those who repent.

The One who rewards good deeds. The One who forgives those who forgive others.

From the root t-w-b which has the following classical Arabic connotations:
to return
to return to goodness, to repent
to be restored
to be rewarded for deeds
to be repeatedly summoned or called

This name is used in the Qur'ān. For example, see 49:12

Allah being At-tawwab means that he turns towards us with his mercy. He always keeps his doors open. Allah turns to us with his love and his mercy. When a person keeps repenting for his sins, Allah turns his mercy towards us. From our repentance, inshaa’Allah we can obtain Allah’s mercy and love.

“Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance (tawwab), the Merciful.” [2:128]

We have all committed sins, some of us have years and years of sins piled behind us, weighing us down on our shoulders. But Allah is At-Tawwab, he is continually willing to turn to us but we must turn to him. We spend years running away from Allah, we spend years turning away and disobeying Allah but subhanAllah just with one sorry, just with sincerity, just with repentance Allah is willing to turn to us. Even some of the worst of people, you see guided subhanAllah Allah brings them from darkness into light.

Ya Rahman, ya Tawwab, forgive us for our endless amounts of sins. We continue to sin and sin yet you forgive and keep giving. Forgive us ya Rabb, pardon our mistakes, and make us among those that you are pleased with. Ameen.

Wallahu ta’alaa ‘alem.

And Allah knows Best.
